Fishin - Shimoda Style

Up here in northern Japan, come the end of fall, the salmon start a-runnin. Once they start running, there are salmon everywhere. There is a small town just southeast of here called Shimoda. They have a salmon festival every year where they block off a part of the river ever year and let the people come in an catch the salmon. The catch is this is pole-free fishing. Chlöe, Tally, & I had to give this a shot. Check out some of the video and pictures below.

Right as the gun fires, everyone makes a mad dash for the fish. There are some small but mostly, 18 - 24 inches and at least a couple of pounds.

After the catch they make sure they are not just faking being caught. I don' t know how many fish each year jump off the butcher table and safely navigate thier way back to the river but this probably prevents that from happening.

More blood and guts than a Quentin Tarantino movie.

Will this be your Thanksgiving main course?!!? No matter when you eat it, I am sure it will be wonderful with as great of a cook that Rose is...and this truly brings to light (or laugh) the saying "fish for your supper"-
I can no longer watch "Finding Nemo" or sing the song "Three Little Fishies" with out shedding a tear knowing now what their fate is in the future...
As always, thanks for sharing your wonderful adventures. What great parents who are raising great kids.
I hope you all have a very happy Thanksgiving. I miss you all...

I loved all the pictures (intil it turned into Chainsaw Massacre that is - uck on the last frame) Pretty cool that you got a picture of Lou Costello in his little red Gap sweatshirt, or was that one of the 3 Stooges? Anyway, fun stuff and the 1st video was great, thanks for posting all that. We'll be missin' you this week. loveyouthemost

how fun! Do you get to keep them for free? YUMMY! I didn't think anyone would be able to actually catch one until I saw one in Tylers hand!
