The Polar Bear Club

When you think of great places to do a polar bear swim, I am sure that West Texas does not come to mind. You might have images in your mind of people going out in January to enjoy some boating and water polo in the local lake. Contrary to those pre-conceived notions the water temp in Texas get about as close as you can get without it actually freezing over.

We left to go swim yesterday at 12:30pm and the air temp was around 60F and sunny. It was really quite pleasant. We got to the lake to see people frolicking and running around in all manner of swim wear. We were all convinced that this would be a walk in the park. The sun was beating down and conditions seemed perfect.
At 1:00pm the organizers made the call for everyone to line up to make the plunge. A few people jumped in quickly. Those in line saw that Chlöe and Tally were absolutely the youngest people there by at least 8 years so they ushered them up quickly. Before they knew it they were in the water and swimming precipitately toward the finish. They looked like Scooby and Shaggy with arms and legs moving faster than the could actually go. I jump in a minute or so after them. When my body hit the water it was the most shocking thing I could remember in recent memory. I couldn't swim fast enough to get out. The nice thing was as soon as we got out the sun warmed us all up quickly...and now we are members of the Polar Bear Club, San Angelo Chapter
